On the morning of April 8, 2025, in the back of an ambulance following two SCAD heart attacks and on the way to emergency open-heart surgery, Amy Schultz asked God a simple question: Is today the day I see You face to face?
His answer came immediately. Three words, clear, calm, and carrying the weight of everything He had been building in her for years: Not today, Daughter.
Not Today, Daughter is the testimony of what those three words meant, and of God who had been preparing the woman who received them long before the ambulance arrived.
Across six years of journals, Amy recorded what God did when He finally had her full attention: the physical healing that defied explanation, the childhood wounds surfaced and released, the relationships restored, the creative gifts awakened, and the small daily obediences that built a faith strong enough to receive those three words without a single moment of fear.

Known But Not Known
There was a little girl sitting on a sofa at her grandmother's house, asking questions.
I was young. Curious in the way that children are curious about the things they cannot see but somehow sense are there. I would sit with my grandma Edith and in my little world she was the wisest person I knew. We could talk about anything. She was patient and gentle with me. One day I asked her about God. I wanted to know what He was, where He was, how she knew Him. She answered me the best way she knew how, as she knew Him.
"His Spirit is energy. The purest of energy."
That was Grandma Edith's description of God. Simple. Honest. Her language pressed into words a child with lots of energy could understand. I did not have a way to understand it yet. But the question had been asked and something in me had leaned toward the answer, toward the idea that there was something real and present and larger than what I could see, and that it was worth knowing about.
That conversation was the first introduction I had to the One who made me. The first seed planted in the soil of a curious, full-hearted little girl who was already paying attention to the unseen things.
The knowing about would take decades to become the knowing.
But the leaning had begun.
Not Today, Daughter
They walked in to see me not yet knowing what they would find.
They found me smiling.
The peace of Jesus does not perform for an audience. What it was, in that moment, was me, covered in tubes and lines, smiling at my husband and my dear friend because I was at perfect peace with God, and nothing in that room could touch it. I could finally give them what He had given me in the ambulance that morning.
Not today, Daughter.
My dear friend told me later that her tears turned to faith and hope after those prayers. We prayed together, the three of us, in the cath lab, surrounded by the full weight of what was happening in the natural and the full weight of what was already settled in the spirit.
In the back of that ambulance it was the plain fact I was standing on. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Either way is a win, according to how He chooses to direct His sovereign will. He gave me my first breath. He will be there for my last. April 8 was not the day.
About the Author
Amy Schultz
Amy Schultz is a writer, an artist, and an entrepreneur who has never been particularly comfortable accepting the surface explanation of anything. She asks questions, follows ideas, creates things, and wants to understand what lies beneath what can be readily seen.
Her faith has not asked her to set that down. It has taught her where it belongs. The independence and determination that carried her for much of her life are still there, still being reshaped by surrender and by the understanding that God's wisdom is greater than her own.
Not Today, Daughter is Amy's first book. Drawn from years of faithfully kept journals, it is the record of a life already being written down long before she knew it would become a book, including the two SCAD heart attacks she survived six days apart. Those events are not the whole story. They are part of a much larger one still being written.
Amy and her husband, Larry, live in Arizona, where she works in real estate and they run Schultz Appraisal together, pursue creative projects, and walk together in the daily adventure of following Christ Jesus.
